Dr. James Franklin Sistrunk was a trailblazing physician whose career transformed healthcare for Fort Lauderdale’s African American community during the era of segregation. Over the course of his distinguished practice, Dr. Sistrunk delivered more than 5,000 babies, ensuring quality medical care for countless families who otherwise had limited access to professional healthcare.

In 1938, recognizing the urgent need for medical services among Black residents, Dr. Sistrunk partnered with Dr. Von D. Mizell to establish Provident Hospital. This historic institution became the first medical facility in Broward County dedicated to serving African Americans, offering compassionate treatment at a time when racial segregation barred them from most hospitals.

Beyond his remarkable medical achievements, Dr. Sistrunk’s work embodied a commitment to dignity, equality, and community. His contributions are honored through Sistrunk Boulevard, a major thoroughfare in Fort Lauderdale that bears his name—a lasting reminder of his service and impact.
Today, Dr. Sistrunk is remembered not only as a gifted physician but also as a humanitarian whose vision and dedication paved the way toward fair healthcare in South Florida. His legacy continues to inspire the pursuit of medical excellence and social justice.
