Dr. Nickie Newsome Bell “Kitty” Beasley (March 27, 1940 – September 12, 2003) grew up in Pine Apple, Alabama, as the third of eight siblings. After moving to Pensacola, Florida, she attended Booker T. Washington High School, where she graduated with honors and was elected school queen in 1958. She attended Florida A&M University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business education in 1965 and a Master of Education degree in administration and supervision in 1969. She later earned a Ph.D. in administration and supervision from Florida State University in 1990. Beasley was an educator for 37 years. She began as a business education teacher at Wakulla High School and then went on to teach at Belle Vue Middle School in Leon County, where she later became assistant principal. In 1980, Beasley made history when she was tapped to lead Nims Middle School, becoming the first female principal in Leon County at the secondary level following integration. Throughout her life, Beasley demonstrated a strong love for humankind through her involvement as a leader in numerous organizations, including Bethel Baptist Church, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, National Association of University Women, FAMU Ladies Art and Social Club and National Hook Up of Black Women. Dr. Beasley was married to Steve Beasley, and was the mother of Cheryl Beasley.
