Robert Clemon “C.T.” “Pap” Tillman, Sr. (1894-1981) was a lifelong resident of Monticello. He and his wife, Sevilla Burney Tillman, became the founders,’ owners and operators of Tillman Funeral Home in 1931. Tillman was the first African-American funeral director in Jefferson County, and a pioneer in African-American funeral service in North Florida. At one point in time, the Tillmans owned and operated funeral homes in Monticello, Madison and Perry. Tillman was well-respected by many citizens in the community. When there were fatalities, Tillman would retrieve the deceased, as the county did not provide ambulance service at the time. In 1965, he turned the day-to-day operation of the funeral home over to his son, William “Spike” Tillman. He was a member and deacon of Greater Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church. Clemon was the father of the late William “Spike” Tillman, Clemon Tillman, Jr., Ephriam Tillman, Bessie T. Early, Almeda T. Montgomery, and Dr. Willie T. Williams.
