The Florida Civil Rights Museum, Inc.℠ (FCRM) is pleased to present a first of its kind, Florida Civil Rights and Education Heritage Trail, which is designed to showcase various individuals and historical sites of significance to the state. The FCRM will produce multiple volumes, which will be distributed statewide. The purpose of the FCRM’s Florida Civil Rights and Education Heritage Trail is to instruct, inspire and motivate the next generation of community leaders and educators. Many of the pioneers who are profiled, all deceased, have been lost to history. It is the unique goal of the museum to engage the youth and everyday citizens in the effort to restore to memory, the courageous and necessary actions taken to ensure that fairness was prevalent in institutions across all economic strata, and that all people were given the opportunity to thrive and succeed in whatever endeavors they aspired to.

The Trail is designed to encourage tourism, as well as foster economic development, by highlighting notable places and people who fostered positive change in the areas of civil rights, education, politics, sports, medicine and religion. In some cases, historical markers will be placed at sites of significance by the FCRM, when granted permission by the property owner. This publication is also meant to instill pride in all Floridians, and to encourage them to learn more about the individuals who impacted not just their city or town, but about those who shaped other areas of the state as well.

The Florida Civil Rights and Education Heritage Trail was conceptualized and introduced to the Florida Civil Rights Museum, Inc.℠ by Delaitre J. Hollinger, who serves as the museum’s co-executive director, educator, lead researcher and chief curator. “I want all people to understand and know that they can accomplish any dream or goal that they may have with hard work, grit and determination,” Hollinger said. “I want them to know that there were individuals of all races, colors and creeds who brought about positive change by being productive members of our society. It is important especially for the young ones coming along, to know that they too can make a difference in the lives of others in their respective communities.”
